hum.  well, in respose to Wolf's topic, I present the newest addition to my growing flock
an eight year old G3 iMac, 333mhz  (which is ~500mhz pentium scale I believe)

http://blackbirdfly.no-ip.org/igrape.html  for more pictures and stuff

I've got a copy of OS X 10.3 sitting at home, I'll grab it friday and try it out.  Seems sad to have a mac and it just be another linux box (Yellow Dog 5 runs quite well though)

Anyone else gots a mac?  Hopefully a bit newer than my little guy, but I dont think any rival the cuteness that is the original iMac

I wanted a Mac laptop, but instead I got a top of the line Dell. And put Linux on it. I tried running Vista in a virtual machine, but it refuses to talk to the host, rendering it useless. This weekend I plan to grab my copy of XP and install that.

Nice comp though, windy. I still want a Mac.

...so is every other computer though
Macs a little less so actually, because they have insane resale value..  and lately, if you compare apples to apples (heh), they're actually cheaper than Dell
I saw a 5 year old ibook on ebay for $500, you couldnt get that from a comperable PC

I need an explanation why the most current hardware matters..
you dont need more than a gigahz for most of your standard tasks;  my main computer is dual 664mhz P3 (ibm netfinity) and it does everything I need it to...
maybe if you're a hardcore gamer, scientist, or graphics designer...
cheaper to go console if you're a gamer...

oh, and what distro Aqualis?  Fedora's still my fav

no but if you dont update hardware often enough the  industry will outpace you and leave you with a slow computer that just gets slower as it tries to update itself with software it can't run

ah, no.
not really
you see, that's the Windows model

OS X 10.3 runs fine on a machine released many years before it was created.  Apparently 10.4 (the newest) will run, but you have to do without some things and its not officially supported by apple.
My three year old laptop is utterly incompatible with Vista, and it was top of the line..  still holds its own with today's lower line.
With Vista the video card isnt supported.  The trackpoint nor touchpad is supported.  The dang modem isnt supported.  Bunches of red X's all the way down the line on the vista update qualifier I ran for grins

All my boxes but one run Linux, and that one dualboots.  I believe my main box, the dual 664, is 7 years old.  I cant remember if its a '99, '00 or '01..  somewhere in that range.  It runs better than my roommates' 3 year old laptop running XP.  Its runs the latest Fedora release (~a few months old), perfectly stable.  It browses the web.  It runs Gaim.  It runs OpenOfffice.  It runs Gimp.  It runs a few games (chess, checkers, Wesnoth, hearts, freecell, etc).  It runs things off my school's network via SSH like Matlab, Maple, etc.
The machine is ~7 years old.  ~Two standard upgrade cycles old (my dad says his dept. cycles every 3-4).
I got it used.  It still runs great, and I leave it on roughtly 24/7
it is, btw, a retired webserver, built like a tank and weighs 50lbs, but it still shows that old computers are still relivant

It will not run the newest photoshop well nor the newest games, but its not a production nor game machine.  For 90% of home users I'd say its an acceptible machine.  People cycle their machines mostly because Windows craps out and they blame the hardware.

I often go on trips to see a friend who only has a lap top mac.  I know people swear by them and all.  But since I am used to PC only, I can?t get the thing to work.  Every time I try to do anything, the window just disappears into the menu bar.  And I can?t understand how to right click when there is not right clicker.

Awesome game there.

I use Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn. It's nice. The only problem I've had so far is getting my printer working. It's a Dell AIO Photo 926, but apparently, nobody has gotten it to work yet.

My laptop stats (as much as I can remember):
Intel Dual Core 2.0GHz
2Gb Ram
140GB harddrive
NVidia 6800 something or other

It's got a webcam built in to it, but I haven't messed with it yet. Maybe that can be something else for me to do this weekend. It came with Vista, which lasted all of four days. Man that's a horrible OS.

Supposedly, the newest version of OS X actually made the older G3 Macs run faster.

Current hardware is shiny and pretty, but occasionally, I use it too. It also lets me run Beryl when I feel like looking at something pretty. Speaking of which, I think I'll start that up now.

O so pretty. 8-) Kind of slow though. Ok, the only thing it actually slows down is Firefox. Which is annoying, cause that's what I use the most. Ok, I can't figure out how to take a screenshot of it in action, other than this.

Pointless, but amusing.

Ubuntu is a great distro, very userfriendly...  almost too much so
ah, and yeah.  Beryl is shiney
http://s4.photobucket.com/albums/y150/windhound/?action=view&current=test-0000-1.flv
quick movie I made of my desktop a week or two ago.  The screencast tool ate up all my processor's power on the lowest settings, but it worked alright and gives a general idea.  There are better movies out there if you want to see what Beryl can do, but I was quite pleased with it
normally (without the screencast app running) Beryl runs smoothly on my IBM Thinkpad T-42, 1.7Ghz PM, 1Gig ram, 64mb ati mobility radeon.  But then again I opted out of some of the more shameless, blatant showoff eyecandy options (like your water effect)

I doubt anything will run on that iMac as well as OS 9.2 did, thing blazed along...  But!  no apps for it.  Everything is OS X now.
I was shocked at shutdown time though..  in OS 9.2 I tell it to shut down and the machine is off two seconds later.  Both Windows and Linux have shutdown procedures they go through, apparently OS 9.2 just closes the running programs and goes down

And that's actually the reason I was so pleased to find this little guy Wolf, I wanted a mac I could play with before concidering a new computer in a year or three.  I'd like to get a mac, but it really wouldnt make sence to get a mac just to throw Linux and Windows on it.  The brand new iMacs in the library felt a little...  I dont know.  The whole thing feels extremely restrictive.  I dont doubt they have the library machines locked down pretty good, but eh.  I wanted somthing I could customize and learn on.  And now I have all 3 major OS's.  woo.

What's blowing up your water Kell?  I havnt seen anything of special note mentioned

Nice video.

I never use the water thing, and I almost never use beryl because it always make Firefox slow down to much. I need to look into that.

hum..  beryl doesnt slow down anything on my machine, and she's ageing, ~3 years old
It'll glitch the menues once in a while, where it'll have a very slight pause and it'll distort the menu, but it clears quick.  like under a second.

got OS X 10.3 running on the little iMac
it runs much better than I would have expected.  I'd have never guessed how old it is just based on preformance.  It'll bog down a little if you have too much running, but for a 333mhz G3 its quite peppy.  Boot time is awesome.  I'd venture to say about a min
I timed my main box the other day, over 8 min for a restart.  About half that is selftests it runs before it even gets to the OS

It turns out Beryl has problems with Nvidia 8xxx series graphics cards, which happens to be what I have. So I'm kind of out of luck until Compiz Fusion is more stable.
