So, what do you think? Many critics of RWL, includeing myself, view the advertiseing ban as little more than an attempt to keep publicity off of RWL's competators, such as Warbands, which I am admin for. It is also argued that the same ban on advertiseing should apply to the admins for purpaces of keeping RWL indapendant, and for fairness to other third party sites.

However, there are those in favor of the ban on advertiseing, saying that the ban helps reduce forum clutter. Others argue that the admins and devlopers diserve some free advertiseing for all their hard work on RWL.

Thanks for making a fair statment of both sides of the issue.

I don't see that it is to keep people here, they are here because they like it here.  If people want to play other games, they can contact some of the many people that will tell them the sites.

I don't think that the Admins can advertise any more then anyone else. But if this server has more then one game running on it (like VI) then it is all somewhat the same.

I see it as the clutter issue. I really don't want to read about some fight on a differant server.  And this is not a statment as a member of the dev team, it is how I feel about reading posts that have nothing to do with what is going on here.

I'd rather see a forum made for advertising or discussion of other games. It would clutter the other forums if it were allowed in them, but I see no problem making another forum specifically dedicated to it. *shrugs* Though I don't really care either way.

I agree with Teufel, but any games or sites that are advertised should be somehow related to promisance, and the admins would have to give you permission to advertise your website.

I'm only for the ban because of the competition between RWL and the other games, notably FaF/TSoR. Otherwise, I think an Advertising forum would be appropriate, but it's inviting controversy into the other areas of the forums as well.

No one looks at the Websites section at Terrouge.

So what people do is post their links in the General Discussion which is a pain for the mods.

Hey, I look at the Websites section!
(I look at it, and I roll my eyes, and mutter "newb!" under my breath, and wander away... but I look at it!)

I think the problem with the Terrouge section is that there's such a huge volume of people on there that it draws in a lot of just general ROCers... RWL doesn't get that so much...

if RWL didn't advertise there wouldn't be any members.
Wouldn't it be fair if we gave the same opportunity to others?

Erm... more of the people I know who are on RWL were solicited by people who were already here... I joined because Those Who Are Now Gone prodded me whilst I was an innocent newb on TUI until I acquiesced. Therefore, I value word of mouth more than advertisment.

That goes double for me. Don't squish the lil guys just cuz they're little. Let em have a chance to attract members to their website.

We did a poll on this, Cal. Most people came from some sort of advertisement on forums, and we get the word of mouth from that.
Also notice that to successfully advertise you must appeal to an entire population, word of mouth can only bring in a selected group. Like your upper class ROC mates.

I wasn't saying everyone on here, Holbs-- I was meaning everyone whose story of coming here I know personally.

As far as elitism, I'm all for it*... but elitism only works as long as there's folks to be elite over**. Hence the fact that the old debate of newb vs. oldbie was vastly superior to all other such divisions, in that there was a clear cut majority of the poor squalloping*** beggars.

***: No, this is not a word. It is, however, highly effective, and therefore I use it despite its lack of existance.
