Darkwood then goes to help Bran. He heals him with no problem and also healed himself from being hit while attacking Ajax

Ajax charged Bran with a half war cry, half screech. Bran flicked his sword up in the air. It fell inbetween the two warriors. Bran then drew his deadly, long dagger whistle Ajax still had his longsword. With a wail of dismay, Ajax charged Bran with a sweep of his sword. Bran easily side sweeped the attack and left-hooked Ajax across the face at the same time.

As Bran does that all darkwood sees is his brother being hit so his natural instincts are to right hook Bran. He then realizes what he did and helps Bran up.
