(Actually, that would be kindof cool in real life. Catch would be using just the right amount of powder to give it enough of a wallop, but not enough to cause a lot of real damage. I wonder how such a device would be classified by the ATF?)

A guy at my school built a cannon out of PVC piping that can fire 10 inch deckspikes all the way through a 4x4 block of wood. It has a range of close to a kilometre, although obviously no accuracy at that range. He also has a potato bazooka that can fling a badly mashed potato across a football field. I'm sure that both are illegal.

In the case of the potato launcher, I doubt it. At least in most places... I'm not so sure about the other device. I suppose it would depend on its mode of operation. Pneumatic? Fuel-Air? Explosive? Magnetic? Mechanical? Some combination thereof? I don't believe that a Pneumatic, magnetic or mechanical device is regulated by the ATF here in the US, though local regulations may apply.

It is in Canada. The potato cannon is powered by propane, and I am not sure about the other one. Pneumatic I believe, but I am not sure.
