the simpsons is wasted on you if you dont have a very extensive literary and historical background to understand all the references

no it's not, dude i've seen 8 yr olds love that show

they love the jokes at face value, but once you get into english courses around the grade 12 level you realize that there are so many references you've been missing. The show becomes soo much better.

i don't claim to understand even a quarter of the references, but when I do it makes it much more enjoyable

I agree, the Simpsons is much better when your aware of all the literary references. I'm pretty sure that every episode has one major theme, something it's poking fun at.
