What are skiffs?

 I have read all the redwall books, and I never remember reading about skiffs. What are they? I think they're some kind of ship, but I'm not sure. It has been a while since I read the books.

 A skiff would be a small boat usually controlled by one oarsman in general definitions...
I hate it when people playing RWL think skiffs are a type of critter... they're manned by... erm... something!
