OK. Is it anything like a real trading card game? Like Magic: The Gathering? (Which I do play)

O_o

gads.  I remember the groups of people in my high school who'd sit in the corner before the bell rang and play m:tg..  never one of them was I

pokemon was.. is..  a reasonably complex card game that is simple enough for young 'uns to play

yu-gi-oh is simplicity in the most idiotic way possible..  brute force..  the show was never good anyways, the rules always changed, the entire thing was setup to sell crud..  I mean, it was a TV show about Playing Cards for goodness sakes..  and saving the world with thoes cards..  which I never understood..  but eh.  my little brother was into it..

LOL. K then. I was one of those people in MS. I'd play Magic before class every day in MS, pretty much stopped in HS, picked it up again in college. I've seen the Yu-Gi-Oh stuff around but had no clue what it was. It's all knockoffs of Magic anyway. All made by Wizards of the Coast. (Who also make Dungeons and Dragons, which I play, every weekend, tis fun, I'm a barbarian in a Victorian Era world. Named Helm.)

Um, Yu-Gi-Oh was not made by WotC.  I can't remember who made it, but it wasn't them.

And Windhoud, can you think of a cartoon nowadays that ISN'T a 30 minute long commercial?

windhound

mainstream cartoon?  eh.  I dont really watch tv much, and I heard that the WB canceled afternoon cartoons.. thoes were the only ones I watched anyways..  now they're just on saturday mornin'   and I dont get cartoon network

most of the pbs stuff is clean, pbs sells plushies, books and stuff but other than that...

what bugged me was the yu-gi-oh cards came out before the tv show..  the whole show was about showing off cards and pushing sales..  and unfortunatly it worked well..
/most/ of the time merchendise comes out after the release..  pokemon was out for a decent amount of time, then got popular, then stuff built up around it..  it wasnt designed to sell toys and nintendo games..

*shrug*

MTG is the only card game worth playing... I've probably played over 10 different card games (yes, even I'm a nerd...) and MTG is the only one that's stuck.

I'm not sure if that was the case in your location, but where I live, the show came out and then it took a month or so before the cards actually came out.  I was almost desparate enough to make my own cards so I could play Yu-gi-oh.  The show had a good theme to it and was all reasonable.  There were, in fact, rules.  It's just that there was a difference between duelist kingdom and battle city regulations.  Some consider Yu-gi-oh to be a rip-off of magic, but it is in fact quite a deviation from MTG.  There is a different sort of strategy involved.  I have seen MTG players that make a killer MTG deck, but can't make a Yu-gi-oh deck worth a crunk.  Not that I'm not knocking MTG, but there is a difference between Yu-gi-oh and MTG, as both are such respectable card games.  Yu-gi-oh, the show, in and of itself, is more of a mainstream anime but on WB it is one of the only worthwhile shows left to watch.  Some of the animation is interesting and it is, I guess you could say a decent anime (the detail entailed does not qualify it to be on the same level as shows such as Fullmetal Alchemist, etc.).

Anyways, that's my change (two cents worth), and that pikachu thing... yeah, it scared me but then I saw the URL and I was like oh, ok.
