Context: I just took my laptop apart for the first time in 5 years and cleaned out the fan. It looked like the lint trap in the drier.

It was severely overheating even while idling, so I don't doubt it was a fire hazard.

after 5 years without being cleaned, there isn't a laptop in existence that wouldn't have that problem.

I think if you open it up you'll find that it's pretty hairy too, maybe it just distributed itself aerodynamically ^_^. The reason mine had a problem was because the dust was blocking the air outlet.

I swear every modern laptop is impossibly difficult to take apart though ... I have a 6 year old laptop which is easy to clean inside, 10 screws off the back on you have direct access to the heatsink - with my new one I have to take off the keyboard, the screen (iirc) and most of the innards just to get at the heatsink. Almost makes you think the manufacturers don't want to clean in?
