I guess not. It just makes me wonder, why are there so many of them? Hundreds, no, THOUSANDS of those shops seem to litter some cities. And they all sell the same things...

That's the thing! I never see anybody actually buy anything. They walk around, and maybe laugh at the stuff. But almost never buy. It is quite odd indeed.
