Most people are inherently bad at life, which is why the poverty level is so high. If you can't afford kids don't have them. A single person can survive on $10/hour (trust me I know) and a married couple can survive on 2x $10/hour jobs. Poverty breeds poverty, don't feel sorry for those who are terrible at life, feel sorry for having to support their butt through wellfare.

Child abuse is also correlated to poverty. Also mental health issues, anger issues, employment issues, drug abuse, spousal abuse, and many other things. If your parents beat you up and you turned out OK, then you're lucky. That doesn't mean it was healthy for you, nor that it taught you about respect.

Respect works 2 ways. You earn it, and you give it. If you want to be respected for the ability to hit a child, or shoot things with a gun, then you aren't really setting the standards very high are you? hah.

You seem like a great guy. I know a lot of folks who were raised the same as you who are great people. But that is not because you were beat, or because you were properly taught respect because your parents were strict. It's because you had other life chances, or role models, or because your parents had other redeemable characteristics. Or maybe Jesus saved you, ionno.
