What do they really do? They dont seem to do anything at all otherwise the entire clan should be unbreakable.

They can up to double your current defenses, but no more than that. So if you have low troops, you don't get much from them.

it is unclear if they actually work though. There have been problems in the past and they are rather annoyingly difficult to test. But I think Shael and I fixed them a while ago, so they should be.

Is there any danger to the troops you share when you share the troops.

[Shadow]

When sharing troops, they can't help you. So your own defenses are reduced. (That said, they are only reduced 10% even if you are sharing 40%. This is a minor bug I noticed ages and and forgot about til now. Not a huge deal either way).

But you won't lose any troops defending allies, if that is what you are asking.
