Getting a doctorate in literature isn't a ticket to becoming a writer, you know - except perhaps a writer of critical theory.

I can't think of a single novelist with a doctorate in literature. Creativity is far more important than learning about linguistic devices.

Also I wouldn't like to socialise with the kind of people who go to Oxford. A friend of mine went to an open day there and the student representative giving the tour referred to state school students as 'commies' - meaning 'commoners' - and that was just on the open day :P

I am bit a mere plebian with my public school education.

I'm currently in top position by a huge margin BUT I'm intentionally dropping down to the bottom.

Muse

Ewww. Well, I'd like to see their faces if a hill-billy Catholic American gets in ;)

That's it? The school im going to now is $24000. I got a full scholarship, but still, before then, I would have gone.

..$24000 tuition. Weren't you complaining earlier about how disadvantaged you were by the school system?

Muse

mmmmmmm......maybe. Wait, no I was talking about how I love my Brothers, not complaining.

you guys have statistically much  better colleges over there, I have no idea why you want to come here unless you're one of those Americans that are a bit too into Harry Potter and think they're going to get the Hogwarts experience :P

(edit: didn't you say you were already a published writer?)

No no, not like that. Oxford has been my dream, ever since I read Tolkien, and Lewis, and Imaginarium Geographica, if you know what that is. Sure, I want mod. Lit., but Im really into the classics.

Edit:Yeah, but it's no big company. All its really accomplished is put me on the radar screen, which, arrogance, isn't enough for me.

You still have a very outdated, fantasist's view of Oxford if you're basing it on literature from the 1950s.

Honestly, Muse, Harvard, MIT, and Yale are all considered better universities than Oxford. Of the top 20 universities in the world, 13 are in the US, so you are probably better off going to college here. You are romanticizing a lot about what Oxford is like, I think. Not to say the UK has crap universities, 5 of the top 20 are in the UK. That leaves exactly two other countries in the top 20 in the rest of the world, and they are in the lower half. Also, 4 of the top 10 are in the UK. The other six are in the US. The main thing about US universities is sheer number of good ones. Most countries have maybe 10-20 really good universities where important research goes on, the US has 100+.

Going to uni to be an author is ridiculous, even if you have the money to waste on the qualification.

A medical degree or a degree in law is necessary to be a doctor or a lawyer, no degree is necessary to be an author. IF you're already good enough to publish a book, and your

Two other things.

  • Pip I think college=University in America. Amirite guys?
  • Shadow the max uni's can charge is £9,000, which I think translates to more in dollars due to exchange rates...I say maximum, but naturally no universities charge below 9,000. I wouldn't be surprised if that changes sometime in the next decade, maybe even next election, due to all the public outrage though.
