Im stepping out into a more lighthearted discussion. Im not going to say my peice yet. Im just going to give the topic.
Do you guys like learning foreign languages? Do you think scools should make it mandatory? If you do, do you study it just to pass or because you really want to? You older, in-or-out of college guys, I really want to hear you guys. Has this helped you so far in life?

I take High School Latin and I think it has helped me a lot. But I don't think it should be made mandatory.

I took French. 2 years of it was mandatory, I took 5 total years. I'd say it was helpful, because it broadened my outlook on the world. In the real world, I've managed to impress co-workers with the fact that I know French, and I've had a couple conversations with Francophone customers.

this is really a debate between colleges teaching and High schools teaching.  The reason high schools teach it is so people can be done with the foreign language requirement for college, but you can still take the language.  Personally a couple years of a language can be very helpful for everyone, so some requirement should be necessary.

IMO one language should be spoken the world over, and I know this sounds uber selfish and nasty but that language should probably be English.

As for languages I did two years of mandatory French and German and school and remember almost none of it, even most of the people I know who took either of them for an extra 3 years can hardly be considered fluent.

I know of one friend who's done French for six years and can hold his own in a conversation, but whether he'll be able to in the future remains to be seen as if you don't practice a language you're liable to forget a lot of it.

I've been very tempted to try and learn Spanish for the last couple of years, not least because I have a lot of Spanish relatives but also because I think it would be one of the more useful languages to learn.

Muse

Yes. I honestly think that if any alnguage would be world wide it would probably be spanish. So yes this is my tenth year taking it and Im not regreting it a bit. and it sounds nerdy but its really funn.

You've been studying Spanish since the age of three? Wow.

I'm currently fluently bilingual in two languages, having grown up with them.

Besides that, I'm trying to teach myself German and Heiroglyphics.

Yes, let's just complete the steamroller of everyone else's cultures and have everyone speak English, watch Fox News, and eat at McDonald's. Grand idea.
