Guard dog as in a stay outside 100% of the time, mostly ignored, doghouse if lucky guard dog?  geh.
Invest in a large shed and a heavy gauge padlock, a decent fence, and maybe some razor wire

I'm confused as to the need to have a pack of 5 'guard dogs' to roam your backyard -- and dogs trained to be viscous enough to be proper guard dogs are gigantic liabilities if they get loose.  It seems like its usually pitbulls, in the news anyways.  Size doesn't matter as much when your entire body is muscle. 
Pitbulls are extremely sweet and intensely loyal dogs, which is where the problem lies... 



Seriously though, an electronic security system would be your best bet.

i have a large shed, i have padlocks and a decent fence with wire but that isn't enough to stop theft.

Why would a trained dog, guard or not, be a liability?

The reason is to mainly deter or in extreme cases defend valuables such as tools in a large garage/shed, a fair amount of cars, other animals and mainly the house.

its not a bad part of town, i mean it has bad parts but im further out hence why theres a lot of space and a yard.

Can you honestly not think of a reason? Unless you are training them to the calibre of seeing-eye dogs... and even then, how would the dig distinguish between intruders and legitimate visitors in your absence?

what legitimate visitor, other than a postman or deliveryman (who puts it in a box or in the back of the horse lorry), friends which the dogs will know and the only other 'visitor' would be an intruder or somebody unwelcome.
