QuoteWhat about Art, the finest subject of all?

The vast majority of modern art sucks.

But I don't disagree. I just think that your reasons are abhorrent.
I meant the honor that was held then, one that is hard to find now. And you are disagreeing on my reasons. Moreover, I can easily find many inspirational things found in past wars from great generals to the bravery of soldiers on the front.
Welcome the most annoying person on Earth, oh look Dark Claws just walked in.

Do you mean the windjammer, the frigate, the battleship, or the duchy/kingdom? (Just so you know, this site contains one history grad student, and at least 4 major history buffs, so you are definitely not alone. LOL.)

History was always my favorite, especially warfare before the 1900s (closest to the fairest kinds of wars, when blades were a secondary weapon instead of pistols, and where combatants respected each other).

Kilk was basically saying that none of what you said was true. For example, the Zulu War in South Africa was fought in 1879. It featured the British using modern repeating rifles, cannon, and even a Gatling gun versus Zulus using spears and swords. Does that sound particularly fair to you? The amazing thing is that the Zulus gave such a good accounting of themselves given the sort of disadvantages they faced. Maybe if you had said before the 1700s, you might have been a little bit more accurate, but there never really was an era where war was "honorable", or "fair". The closest we ever came was probably the first year of WW1, before the various combatants had gotten their notions of the glory, honor, and chivalry knocked out of them. The first Christmas in the trenches of WW1, in some areas a general truce was called, and the two sides got out of there trenches and mingled. Traded food and such. This was the product of nearly 100 years of relative peace. The last major pan-European wars before WW1 were the Napoleonic Wars. Time enough for a bunch silly notions about the nature of war to grow up in the minds of most Europeans. The brutal trench fighting of 1915 and 1916 gave the combatants a good look at the true nature of war.

I like him to. You got to give him credit for the German Empire

But then, Fritz as such a history as a character. They suspected he had a gay lover, and the guy was later executed in front of him after the couple tried to run away to England.

That may have been just a myth created by Voltaire. Frederick and Voltaire were good friends, but later had a nasty break with each other over Frederick's militarism. Shortly after, a pamphlet appeared detailing Frederick's homosexual affairs. This pamphlet may have been written by Voltaire, and probably wasn't true. Historians generally consider Frederick to have been essentially asexual, more concerned with battle and war than with women.

Oh, didn't hear that part.

About the second, he didn't leave any sons, so it passed on to his nephew. I would support that.

Also, I think I am beginning to worship you. I just wish my class goes more in depth with European history around 1700s and 1800s.

Buy used, save money, own books, read books. Don't expect much out of your high school teachers on the subject matter.

Fun fact: I teach this stuff.

After seeing this, I'm saving up my money now....

The last one reminded me of Sun-tzu's book, German version. One of my relatives own it for playing League of Legends.

Kilkenne

That's because it's Frederick the Great's interpretation/comments on the Art of War. Makes sense that it'd remind you of it. There are a medley of other books, but those are pretty easy to read (relatively speaking) and a decent place to start. There are some dumbed-down historiographical mish-mashes, but they're worth skipping.

If you've really only got cash for one book right now;

I'm not sure who else has it in paperback, but it also might be more convenient due to the fact that it's a national bookseller, not an internet bookstore like Amazon.

Preußen

HAWT. That book is exactly what I've been looking for. I'll force my dad into Barnes and Nobles when he drives by it...

Just a question...that's Kaiser Wilhem on the cover, right? I'm still spotty on my people recognition.
