Well, it's a big deal when a kid gets their wand broken, and it's a pretty high order to get yours snapped, right? Fred and George got up to all sorts of crazy antics and never had it happen, so let's figure it happens about once every five years when someone does something terrible. (You don't get thrown out of Hogwarts for being a terrible wizard, I mean Neville is there, and Herbology has nothing to do with Magic, so all the students that do well at that are probably awful too, despite the fact that they are magic plants, Muggles could care for them)

So, 40 students in each year, every 5 years one gets his/her wand knocked off (remember it was a huge deal that Hagrid wanted to keep a secret or whatever the deal was with the umbrella), figure 1/200 gets their wand knocked off, so that'd put 278/279 students in the stands. Does that make sense?

Per house. I see.But Ron broke his wand and he got it replaced. So he didnt really drop out.

I also think Hagrid was expelled?

Oh, yeah, I'm talking like, ceremonial wand-breaking, which seems to mark real expulsion. Hagrid always talked about them busting his wand, I believe, and that signified that he had been expelled.

However, that raises the question, couldnt' he have just waltzed into Ollivander's shop and bought a new wand, or do you think there is a list of folks they can't sell a wand to? (Sort of like there is a list of who can and cannot own a firearm)

Well, the wand picks the wizard. So theres a chance Hagrid might not of been able to find another wand. Of course, even if he did, The school itself wouldnt let him back in if he was expelled.

Also,
