College Majors

Well I saw another topic about someone switching their major, and it made me wonder what majors every on this site has? I'm interested to see the wide range of majors.

I myself never went to college (and the more I type the more obvious it may become haha) but I was lucky enough to get a job right out of highschool, and so far things have worked out for me. Although if I ever went back to college, I say I would probably go for Accounting, or some sort of Computer Programming/IT course.

Currently halfway through third year of Physics-Mathematics, with a personal focus on computational physics through the co-op program.

That /does/ sound fun, Ashy. What sort of stuff do you make?

I did Computer Science. It was tough, but definitely worth it. Thinking about going back for a masters in Software Engineering.

I'll see if I can find some pictures, I'm not on my home computer at the moment though.. I recently made a handmade morse-code machine and a post-apocalyptic tent. :D

Yup, I got the itch when I got the news about Brian Jacques , and then had my wisdom teeth pulled on wednesday, so I've been sitting around running out of options of what to do, so I decided to come check it out again, and I can say I've caught the bug again. Good to see everyone.

Collage. I had planed on getting a MBA for business right out of high school. But at 18 there was a big surprise when the silver spoon was yanked out of my mouth and found I had no trust fund. Lived in my car or friends couches when I could find someone with a couch. Did construction, opened a construction company, used that money to get a real estate license, opened a real estate office. Then used that money to go back to school to get a JD degree. Now manage the people that manage office buildings.

Although logically one would think a boss would believe that someone with experience out does the degree, it is not true. Sure if you move up the ladder in the same company it does. One of the VP at Wal-mart was once a "greeter". But in this technical age resumes are uploaded in a data base then internally like Google searched for key words. If you resume does not have those key words, no human will read it. Even if a human reads it, the unimaginative HR department has a check list for the job requirements (which may have nothing to do with what the job really does) and if they don't find all the boxes checked, they don't pass the resume to the boss.

There is a thin line between education and experience. All depends on how much of your fun time you want to give up in your youth to take a shot at a better life later. I ran across someone I knew a long time ago who used to spend all his money parting as soon as he got it. He said long ago "But what if I don't make it to 30 years old and leave a bank account I never got to spend?" I said "What if you make it to 50 and still have nothing saved?" So when I recently reconnected on Facebook I asked him how old he is, he said "50".

I finished a Bachelor of Journalism last year.

I can't say it really gave me any skills that helped in my job, I had to learn those as I went. But I did need the degree - they won't hire anyone without it.

I was very close to being a history major actually. But I realized I could take nearly as many history classes as a history major if I made it my minor, and then I wouldn't have to deal with all the extra liberal arts classes you have to take to get a Bachelor of Arts. LOL.
