I have a dog and 2 goldfish right now. I like my goldfish swimming around in circles all day...haha. They just bring the mood of the room up.

I would suggest parakeets. I had parakeets for years, they don't really smell, their singing is relaxing (most of the time) and they're simple to take care of.

My cousin had a bunch of finches. They were really cute! I'm not sure how much work they took...
