Pac-man

Really? Wow.

Finally I have an argument to show that the RWL forums aren't a waste of time!

So what classes do you teach, Kilk?

Kilkenne

Intro to Modern Europe - 3 sections
The Industrial Revolution - 1 section
Post-Medieval Europe and the Reformation (this one has very few students but is part of my advanced degree work)

Pac-man

Ooooh, cool! The industrial revolution one sounds really cool!

Which is your favorite to teach?

The Reformation, because it's kind of my baby, but I like the Industrial Revolution more most days because there's kind of a set bunch of material to go on. I feel like I'm flying on the seat of my pants with the Reformation. It's not something that entire classes are based around.

Intro European isn't too awful, but it's a course that most people just take to fulfill their university history requirement so a lot of people are disinterested. Which is cool with me, I don't take attendance really, if they don't want to do their work I'm not going to twist their arm, either. It's their grade, not mine (although my superiors would rather everyone passes)

My sections of Intro are all discussions, and a professor does the lecturing, I follow a professor's mandate for lectures in the Revolution, and I do my own thing in Reformation because it's experimental.

Pac-man

Wow. Cool.

What did you major in/what career are you pursuing?

Kilkenne

History/Theology, working on my PhD in European History that includes an emphasis on Western religious principles (Judeo-Christian and Islamic).

I'm hoping that I can keep going with this and teach at a college as a professor one day, but the work load is starting to get to me so I might go teach high school. Teachers are retiring in droves in my state due to the new law that strikes down their union, so I might just strike when the iron is hot, so to speak. I'm closeish to done with my thesis, it's just more time of teaching, so I'll likely just tough it out.

Pac-man

Big into history and such, eh? Do you have a favorite time period to study?

Do you enjoy teaching? (Well apparently you must if your pursuing that for your career...) You previously mentioned you've studied allot of philosophy too?

Yeah, the philosophy is important to theology so I have a pretty good background in that. They kind of go hand in hand because most of the famous philosophers have tried to answer questions about God's existence/omnipresence/etc. I'm, admittedly not a very big studier as far as the traditional aspect goes, but that's because in history either remembering dates and stuff comes natural from the reading/research you do, or you should probably find another field. I know a few people who do a lot of studying to remember their dates/people but that seems foreign to me.

My method of "study" is mostly buying or making copies of any material that I'll probably ever need to get what I need to get done. I do this because I write nearly constantly in the margins of everything as I read, and I hate not being able to do that. It drives me nuts having to write not in a book, I don't know where or when I picked up this habit but between that and puting sticky notes in the pages of most of my books (20+ per book on my shelf for the ones I use for research) I am basically a terror to books. One day I hope to own many leather-bound books that I won't write in.

Teaching is awesome, but as the people who have heard me on vent will tell you, I tend to talk really fast when I get excited. So they make fun of me a lot but it's all fun.

Pac-man

I am really interested in philosophy as well.

Lol! I write in all my books too!!! I hate library books and borrowed books because I have to write thoughts/notes elsewhere.  :D
