Sorry this isn't exactly prompt guys, I've been busy with Christmas and whatnot. Last "week" Whiskey in the Jar won, so this week it goes up against a classic American song.

The Dubliners - Whiskey in the jar

Don McLean- American Pie (with Lyrics)

I'm currently in top position by a huge margin BUT I'm intentionally dropping down to the bottom.

isn't the point of the cage match to showcase more obscure tunes? American PIe is far too mainstream.

Megadeth isn't mainstream? Besides, American Pie was mainstream 30+ years ago. It hasn't been a "Top 40" song for decades. It's re-release in 1991 didn't even make the charts in the US.

Anyway, I've been asking for suggestions, and I told you lot that I didn't have a bunch of ideas left in the barrel. It was either "American Pie" or "Danny Boy". I was trying to stay away from metal and hard rock, which I know much better and could pull out some really obscure/new stuff. I doubt anyone here except maybe Gorak has ever heard of Lair of the Minotaur, but people were whining about the metal/hard rock domination, so I changed it up.

Megadeth isn't really mainstream Volk... perhaps for metal fans they are, but in general only a minority of people would actually know who they are, and even fewer would have heard their music before.
American Pie is...one of the most famous songs ever...and overated imo.

Umm... ever heard of Madonna??

Anyway... are American Pie and Danny Boy really the only non-metal songs you know? haha.

And if you're going for a kind of... "folky" theme or whatever, I am like obsessed with this song right now:

Mumford and Sons - Little Lion Man

Metallica are the only *real* mainstream metal band atm...the genre isn't very popular at the moment.
Most the people I know who've heard of Megadeth only even know them because Mustaine left Metallica.

Bah. Megadeth is mainstream, their 2007 album debuted at #8 on the Billboard top 200 chart.

QuoteAnyway... are American Pie and Danny Boy really the only non-metal songs you know? haha.

LOL, no, obviously not, as I have been sticking non-metal songs into the Cage Match for weeks now. They were the only two I could think of at the time. The problem is not that I don't know non-metal bands, it's that I don't know a bunch of obscure non-metal bands.

QuoteUmm... ever heard of Madonna??

Yes, I know she made a "cover" of it, but it wasn't at all true to the original. It only contained 2 and 1/2 of the songs 20 or so verses. Utter travesty.

Thanks for the contribution though, that will be the next song I put up in the Cage Match.

True, most "metal" these days is basically rock, and most of that is stuff like Linkin Park or Death Cab for Cutie.

QuoteMost the people I know who've heard of Megadeth only even know them because Mustaine left Metallica.

Meh. I still say it's mainstream when it breaks the top 10 of Billboard.

Volkov's running the show now, he can do with it as he wills

I mostly ran with metal because that's what the majority of requests were for, and when it came to people who were into music enough to be talking about it on the forums and what not, hard rock and metal seemed to be a favorite at the time

I got pretty borderline mainstream myself at times with Megadeth and SixxAm

You know, even though often mainstream music is bland and only exsists to satisfy majorities, just because a song's mainstreram doesn't mean it can't be enjoyed.

that wasn't the point
I was trying to stay away from songs you here on the radio, not because I dislike them, but because you can just turn on the radio and here them
the point was to get people to hear music they might not otherwise hear.
but seeing as it's a popularity contest, it will naturally gravitate towards mainstream

My post wasn't aimed at any one point, but I see what you mean.
