All five acts became popular in the late 1950's, early 1960's. Berry is credited by many with being one of the creators of the genre, which makes sense, since rock and roll evolved out of African American music. Cash was primarily a country music artist, but he also made some rock and roll songs. Rock and roll had a lot of influences from country music as well. Elvis and the Beatles are the two best selling artists of all time, so while neither can really be credited with creating the genre, they can both be credited with popularizing it. The Stones were part of the same wave of British artists that the Beatles were, and are also extremely popular, so I figure they deserve mention too.

Where are the Jonas Brothers? :D
Anyways, I'd probably have to say beatles, though it depends what form of rock you refer to.

I'm currently in top position by a huge margin BUT I'm intentionally dropping down to the bottom.

I think The Beatles shook the world with it and changed it to go in many, many directions. None of those other artists made nearly as big of an impact as the Beatles did.

Well, I'm talking about rock and roll, as the title says, from which all forms of modern rock and metal descend.

You'd be surprised. Elvis made a huge impact as well. John Lennon himself said that if rock and roll wasn't called that, we'd probably call it "Chuck Berry music".

They do not.

Don't make me find you and do things that you won't remember until you're 40.

To what I consider actual rock, not "series of sounds intended to excite" I'll say the Stones.

Gen. Volkov

Poor Chuck. Left out in the cold again, while other artists take credit for his work. Just like the darn Beach Boys.

I voted the Beathes cause I like them better than Elvis and I haven't heard any of the other people.  Some of those I don't even recognise.

I voted the Beatles even though I like the Stones waaaay better. I think the key word here is "popularising"... they were bigger than Jesus ffs.

Wow... you don't know who Johnny Cash is? They just made a movie about him! Joaquin Pheonix, Reese Witherspoon? Ring any bells? It was called "Walk the Line". Reese won and Academy award for her role. Chuck Berry is pretty dang famous too. He wrote "Johnny B. Goode", which "Back to the Future" kind of spoofed by saying Chuck got the idea from Marty McFly. Then... well, how can you not know who the Stones are? They played the Superbowl!

No offense... but if you don't know who these really famous artists are... why are you voting?

Maybe I should have just said "created". Though Elvis was unbelievably popular as well. Both he and the Beatles claimed record sales of more than 1 billion, the Beatles do have more certified sales though, but both were around before certified sales really came into being.

I don't like the Stones - their music is not bad, but nothing special, and Mick Jagger is an [Behind] - when he played in NB, he basically expected the stage crew to work for free. His idea was that they could put the fact that they had set up for the stones on their cv instead of being paid.

That being said, I'll admit that being a jackass isn't necessarily a bad thing for a rockstar.

I voted Beatles. Remember that they were around for the era where "groups of guitars are on the way out." So they were pretty early in the rock scene.

I really wanted to vote The Beatles, but I figured that they'd disapprove.

Berry was a massive influence on The Beatles, and they attribute him for most of their musical influences. All those groups of the 60's do. So I think without him, The Beatles and the Stones and stuff wouldn't be The Beatles and the Stones and stuff. Yes, I know that's a rubbishy argument.

OK, whatever.

They were among the first rock and roll bands, and wildly popular, so I suppose they are a reasonable choice. Me, I chose Elvis. He wasn't as early as Chuck Berry, but he predates the Beatles by a bit and was already wildly popular by the time of the British Invasion.

Doesn't it just depend how far back you wanna go? Jazz? The invention of electronic instruments?

Gen. Volkov

Well, no, since we aren't talking about the influences that led to rock and roll. We are talking about the creation and popularization of the specific musical style known as rock and roll. That occurred in the 1950's and early 1960's.
