I've been meaning to ask this for a while.

The pictures you've made for your signature and ingame are really good, I was wondering what software you used to make them?

And I don't want any of you PA imposters posting here and trying to confuse me  *cough*Firetooth*cough*

Thanks for the reply WIndy

I've used Fireworks a lot in the past but when I had to reinstall xp I didn't realise I'd lost the validation key for The Macromedia suite.

I know a fair few of my friends use Photoshop, and I really like Fireworks but they cost so much to buy, I've been trying to live with gimp but I'm finding it hard,  maybe it's just me.

I don't suppose you have any experience with Image editing software Windy?

windhound

Yar, The GIMP was designed for and just works better under Linux
I like it quite a bit, but as I'm sure you've found the learning curve is slightly steep.  Especially if you're coming from photoshop and have an idea of how things 'should' work

I started using a six year old lampshade iMac as my primary to save a bit of desk room at the moment, just a temporary solution.  That and I really like OS X.
GIMP, however, doesn't have a native OS X release and it runs slow as mud.  So I'm running Photoshop CS4 on it at the moment, which runs quite well.

We do not condone software piracy here at RWL, but *cough* its not exactly hard to do.  Just watch out for the infected torrent files and the like, avoid cracks if you can.

There was a version of GIMP released a long while back called GIMPshop, which took GIMP and layed out its menu system to be a photoshop clone.  You may feel more comfortable with that

Software Piracy? You mean guys with speedboats and guns steal container loads of Adobe CDs and sell them on the black market? Or are you referring to copyright infringement?

Yeah, actually.  Its getting harder though, darn government warships keep hanging around

Still, if you block their phone-home ports it does make it harder for them to find you.

I don't think I'd sleep easy if I'd pirated something but thanks for the info about photoshop and Gimp.

I did actually install Linux (through Wubi) on my personal computer, but my graphics card seemed to hate Linux and it sort of crashed spectacularly, I like it when it worked though, it's just ashame it doesn't support more hardware :(

Was it like a theme for Gimp or did you have to completely download and reinstall it as something else?

I'm currently in top position by a huge margin BUT I'm intentionally dropping down to the bottom.

GIMPshop is a complete restructuring of GIMP's User Interface, so its another full install not a theme

There's a new version of Ubuntu fresh out, you might try again.  The drivers are getting better every day.
I can't say much for WUBI...  I guess it works alright but it always works better to just make another partition for your OS

i saw there was a new version, 9.04? Am I right?
I might give it a go, well I'll definitely give it a go in one way or another, me and my uncle are trying to resurrect some old laptops we bought of ebay and we're thinking of installing Ubuntu/Xubuntu as they're specs are a bit low and Ubuntu isn't as demanding as greedy old Vista is, I hear 7 will be worse though, they just never seem to learn . . . .

Meh I'm lazy :P

windhound

Actually 7 is -supposed- to be better as far as being a total hog
Microsoft is having to keep extending XP over and over in part because Vista wont really run on netbooks.  The last thing Microsoft wants to do is let Linux have free reign in that rather popular market section.  I think they're aiming for Windows 7 to be netbook-friendly so they can finally axe XP (which they've been trying to do since Vista was released)

But yeah.  9.04, released April '09 (holycow a naming scheme that makes sense!)
Xubuntu may or maynot be a better choice.  XFCE is generally an excellent, light window manager...  but the Ubuntu team, in their infinite wisdom, bastardized it.  Its shinier and slightly easier to use for newbies, but I believe it uses significantly more resources than a stock XFCE install.  Give Ubuntu a try on them first, generally it's happy enough with 512mb of ram.
