In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts. So in old England, when customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at them mind their own pints and quarts and settle down. It's where we get the phrase "mind your P's and Q's"

In the old west cowboys had little money, so when they went to the bar for a drink, they had no money. Bar tenders had an idea that the cowboy could trade bullets in for drinks, but not for a full drink. So they got little glasses to only give a little drink. Thus came the name "shot glass".
