Like the kid who quit school to play guitar hero full time.
On a semi-rrlated note, I hate guitar hero. It is the absolute worst form of pointless activity.

Hey, go easy on them gamers. Their demands push the limits of our hardware and software, bringing us all more powerful hardware to play around with.

Moreover, why the complaints about computer games with no complaints about the movies, television, radio and popular literature? All of these activities draw time and resources from more important things, why single out video games?

Watching TV is hardly considered a skill, and in most cases it isn't a lifestyle. Ditto to radio. Literature can be, but it depends on what you mean by popular.

I believe nev was commenting on Gorak's statement on how hardcore games have no life.
HardCore gamers fill their freetime with games in much the same way others do with movies, television, radio, and books.

The term "Couch Potato" refers to people who spend the vast amount of their time on the couch, usually watching TV.  Given you believe Gaming can be a lifestyle, TV can certainly be.
And, given the absurd amount of obesity in the US of A, there's a larger population of Couch Potatoes than Gamers and they deserve recognition for their (unhealthy and sad) lifestyle.
Neilsen's reports the average person spends 142 hours per month watching tv.  That averages to 4.7 hours -per day-.  Average 8 hours of sleep, an 8 hour work day, and the average american spends half their free time watching TV, not counting time taken for meals or anything else.
Which is absolutely insane, and definitely could be considered a lifestyle

Radio is the least likely to pose a problem as generally people listen to it while doing something else.
Gaming, TV, and Books require your full attention

On a random sidenote,
My littlest brother is fun to watch play videogames, SuperSmashBros: Brawl in particular.  I got him a wavebird because he's non-stop bouncing and occasionally jerks the gamecube controller's cord out.  Just because in general gamers dont get exercise when playing doesnt mean they all dont.  He works up a good sweat.

Whoever invented the Wii was brilliant.  Not only does the player get his/her gaming fix, but most games (when played properly) require physical effort.

I think its kind of a joke, but Wii even has their "Fit system" that is supposed to promote more physical activity.

Yes. I wear high heels Krowdon. Any tips on how I should do my hair?

Actually, when you use Wii Fit correctly, it gives a nice moderate workout. Plus, you can reward yourself by playing some of the games after you've finished your strength training, yoga, etc.

I singled out gamers, simply because this thread was about gamers
also, I know alot more people who devote themselves to video games, then to movies and TV ect.

there's nothing wrong with playing games, but if they become the focus of your life, I consider you a pathetic human being
why?
because you have to resort to some fashion of escaping reality rather then making something of your life

The same could be said for any number of other things: books (there's a ton of people who do that), the internet (also a ton of people who do that), porn (can we say, "Eww, gross! ;))...

If people find enjoyment in playing games, why not play them as much as they want to? Also, most hardcore gamers play online with their buddies, so they're not escaping reality any more than someone who spends time chatting to friends on the internet or updating their Facebook page does. Everybody has different interests, different things that they do to unwind/relax/entertain themselves. You spending your free time to play guitar (or whatever else you do) doesn't make you any different than someone who plays video games: you both know what you enjoy and spend your time doing the things you enjoy.

I play games a lot because I live a very secluded life on a small ranch in one of the most rural parts of Kentucky.....

And I was born in Detroit, Michigan.... so I'm sure most of you can understand the culture shock.

And another weird thing is three years after we moved here, some other people moved in about five miles down the road. The people's kid must of been desperate because he tried to get intimate with one of our horses, so the extremely rich guy that rents them their property made them move out... weird people here... glad I have a shotgun... with no bullets...

Agreed.
Gee, I havent posted here since...ever :o
My sister basically spends her whole life reading, some people spend their whole lives playing sport. Whilst thats not as "nerdy" as playing games all your life, its still got no variety.
Look at people on x-factor etc who think they can sing;Is that any better? They're trying to make themselves believe they're good at singing. Besides, who doesnt want to escape reality once in a while? Yes, I'd say hardcore gamers are annoying, especially one's who spend their whole lives locked in a room with a toilet, fridge, computer and bed, but you can't jump to conclusions without looking at it properly.

Again, there is nothing wrong with playing games to unwind/relax, again, it's when they become the focus of your life. What you live for.

I don't play music to escape reality, I play music because that is reality, that's me making something of my life, building a career in music
it's hard work, but I'm making good progress

for me, music = career
video games = past time

there is a BIG difference in the pursuit of each
