Some advice for seriously new newbies:

-Use your protection turns scouting, constructing, and looting.
-Make sure you have plenty of troops and whatnot before you come out of protection.
-Store up some food!
-Put some $$$ in Cluny's Hut.

NEVER ever make a loan!!! You'll never be able to pay it off!
Keep money in the bank so that if you get attacked and your economy goes horrid, you can draw on it to get your out of the red until you can stabalize.
