Can you still produce food with the leaders and all that?

there is no feast mission like in reg, if that's what you're asking

leaders can increase your food production, though.

They do? I tried using the food income, but I lost more than what I gained.

you would have lost even more if you hadn't used it ^_^

you need good base production (eg foragers and workers being taxed above 20% with economy set to make food) for your leaders to increase their production. Leaders boost what your workers make, they dont make anything themselves.
