Kilkenne

Gen. Volkov

Quote from: Peace AllianceBecause everyone should already know what a dust mote is?

Yes. Most kids learn what a dust mote is at a fairly young age.

Quote from: Kilkenne
Old people actually do this?

I did just last week.

I'm with peace, I've never heard of a dust mote. But I would have used better search terms :P

Peace Alliance

OK well to be fair, I used like 10 different search terms, that was the one I'd been using at the time and yes, it wasn't the best. But we all know that as you try and try you start using different words to try to get what you want to show up. Every now and then it works, it's the same process humans use for like... every problem ever.

Muse

Yeah, dust motes are in Redwall, but the only way I learned of dust motes at a young age is because I read a lot more than anyone my age and many people older and read more advanced books. My peers, mostly, have probably never heard the word at all.
Stop! Don't touch me there,
this is my private square!

You never read Redwall either, did you?

(Though to be fair, I didn't either. LOL. I came across it in another book. No idea which one. Definitely a kids type book though. Maybe Animorphs?)

ONCE AGAIN, I am disadvantaged because I didn't read books as a kid.

Actually, this is the only time I have been disadvantaged because of that, and it's not even a disadvantage.

Certainly it could have amplified your already expansive vocabulary, making you sound even more intelligent. Though you're already very smart so you'd probably talk like Volkov had you read books as a kid. LOL

I donno, animorphs doesn't exactly make me think of intellectuals.

And who the heck remembers which series they learned what word in? The only example I have of that is when I learned the word "niggardly," and that's because I was so shocked until I looked it up and found out that it isn't remotely racist.

LOL, which is my point. You hardly need to be an intellectual to know what a dust mote is.
