The block to indies (before the race change) was food. If I had an unlimited amount of food I could have gotten much larger nets. If you play as wolf you can store food as a leader and then change over to barracks.

i kinda disagree with that
Although i agree the block was there you could just put more land into foragers and use the food as a kind of net buffer
So you could always be going upward in net
