The Imperials are the people from Cyrodill which is a country to the south of Skyrim. They pretty much own the whole continent except the bit that the Elves live on. Long story short the Imperials got their crap wrecked by the Elves and in the peace agreement the Elves told them that they couldn't worship one of their Gods anymore (Talos), so the Stormcloaks decided that they would rather worship Talos and also be huge racists all the time, so they rose up in rebellion, following Ulfric Stormcloak, who can shout the same way that you do only he isn't a dragonborn.

Basically you are either fighting for religious oppressionists or racists.

I just killed the poor priest where I found him, that's the only daedric quest I didn't want to do. I did the one with the book and a few other ones for swords and stuff.

I didn't think that I would have to beat the poor guy into submission.

The imperials don't really have any choice though and don't oppress the religion, they just allow the Thalmor to.

Personally, I sided with the imperials because I like Hadvar and Ulfric is about as exciting as a game of televised golf. Then again, Bethesda did write the character, and they don't do interesting.

I've done it both ways now, and Imperials are the "good" guys, really. I feel like a turd working for the Stormcloaks.
