I am considering ditching the merc sell button - it seems the market is active enough that almost nobody ever needs to use it. Would this interfere with your gameplay?

It could be useful, but I rarely use it.

I have never used it, but that is because I never pay attention to the market. ;)  Keep it for other people.

I never use it. The only time I would is to pull stuff out in an emergency, or if it didn't sell and it's the last day.

No worries, I coded around it.

The market has new code which summarizes availability while allowing merc sell to continue to work as is. 
As far as I can tell it works fine, but please let me me know if you notice issues.
