If I (or any other emperor) go on vacation, will I remain emperor or will I lose the emperorship?

That's a great question. The Emp system currently doesn't take vacation into account. But right now, I think after 72 hours, being in vacation drops you out of the normal scores list, and when that happens, you will lose emperorship in 12 hours. The person below you will have a chance to become Emperor if they stay in rank 1 for 10 days.
