It's true, by the third or fourth run of the set your first one is completely irrelevent. However, running intellligently can help stop someone from grabbing an early lead, or help you get one yourself, which can affect the game in the long term is you manage to lock out of protection.

If you manage to lock, and that's a very big if. Besides, even if you do manage to lock for awhile, an indy or team effort will still break you at some point. I think it's safe to say that your first run out of protection is a negligible factor in how you do in the round. It's more about the team you build around you and what sort of strategy you decide to pursue.

I scout 100, then build on it, then scout the rest all the way out of protection.

A lot is on scouting but some is on looting and foraging.
