General Discussion / Re: Promi design discussion

I really like the weather idea. Been playing around with the idea of skill trees for different races

Wonder how adding a few additional civ style elements would translate to promisance? Like a world map? might/probably would feel like a different game entirely. Though again I think the pure numbers based aspect of promis is  a weakness rather than a strength

All opinions welcome!

Would like to hear the reasons everyone is still playing this game, especially what aspects of it trump what newer games have to offer, as well as it's pros and cons

Pros:
Strategy aspect of promis are rewarding. Learning and implementing basic strategies are extremely effective and seeing that translate to in game resources, troops, and other successes feels good to a player

Slower pace means you can play for < 5 minutes a day and be done with a run and put it aside

Forced interaction with other players (land) is supposed to result in unpredictable, always changing landscapes

Diplomacy/coordinate aspects extremely rewarding. A turn is a turn, how you use it, especially in conjunction with others, results in interesting and diversified gameplay

Cons:
Now optimized strategies doesn't lead to emergent gameplay. Leaders are broken, solo indy is impossible, and those are really the only two strats.

Gameplay is repetitive and honestly boring when nothing is happening. Hard to hop into and immediately feel like part of the playerbase without heavy investment. Can be somewhat alleviated with better designed UI/tutorials

Honestly I feel like the emergent gameplay bit is probably the worst part. In my experience 95% of rounds is just stacking resources and then the last week or so is the only interesting part. But that's just a result of the round ending, which provides incentive for interaction. The game doesn't incentivize interaction outside of that, which leads to stagnation.

Game doesn't give you much of an identity. Your only "personal attribute" is your race and that just provides passive stats. There isn't much in the way of you feeling like you can insert yourself into the game anywhere.

Please contribute thoughts!

Return to Redwall / Re: Woof = Drama

Gonna have to back the tooth brothers on this one

Might be biased cuz I've worked with them extensively over the years, specially sharpy, but game drama aside there's some very clear personal attacks going on.

living in your mom's basement might be a joke, but it's not one that has a very good connotation, especially paired with the direct insinuation that firetooth is cheating with a multi. imo that's straight up in bad taste, especially as an admin who should be held to higher standards. Shadow has had plenty of spats with Sevz and every time he conducts himself perfectly.

[Soon a giant emperor will appear in game which can only be beaten and raided should all the game work together.]

most normal path first

most unethical second

if I like the game enough to play it again afterward I'll be an angel

only exception is Undertale which I did in reverse order lmao

My tag is Uiblis, I've been around since 2008 but didn't make a forum account til far later. I'm a lot younger than many of the true veterans like shadow, volky, windy, etc. Started when I was 13 or 14, currently 20, so RWL has honestly been a pretty big part of my life.

Like everyone else, I started out as a newbie but later became one of the more formidable leaderers on either server.
Suppose my claim to fame is being the first "official" emperor of the new era in reg after that feature was coded in. Post food networth nerf too hehe

Started going inactive a little bit after 3.0 dropped and reg started to stagnate after sevz and co gave up on it. Super excited to get back into the swing of things. The days where I would schedule runs at like 3 in the morning so I would optimize turn use and not waste any past the cap...feels so long ago.

Special shoutouts to Shadow for answering my questions and giving me code/math for various game mechanics, as well as sharptooth for being a fantastic teammate in our many adventures in various turbo rounds.

Polling / Re: What do non-Americans think of America?
August 25, 2015, 07:23:52 PM
I've lived in the U.S for most of my life, so I probably couldn't give you an accurate answer.

However, the general tone/outlook that I get from most of my family members (big-city China) is that the United States is respected for its obvious economic status and political power, and envy the higher salaries and quality of living. However, they look down on most Americans and see most of them as sheep/uneducated/racist/etc. They also believe that the political system is corrupt and unfair, though if you push them hard enough they'll acknowledge that China's as [screwed] up, if not more [screwed] up than, the U.S's.

tl;dr pro - cleaner air con - white people :P

Strategy / Re: Balance

You'll almost always be a target. Holding into land and slowly getting bigger typically doesn't work out.

The basic gist of most strats is to grab as much land as possible in your first 50 or so turns and then generate the crap out of as much resources as possible, knowing full well you'll lose the land later, but still keep everything you made during that time.

There's a lot of ways to optimize a run, so if yiu're like me you'll eventually build up a massive collection of equations and resource optimization calculations to get the most out of every turn, lmao

but overall don't worry about land, it comes and goes and that's fine for your growth
