I'm on the short end of it. I got close to 30 hours into my ppl before I ran out of money. That's when I applied for NavCanada instead.
Alot of commercial guys switched to control because it's more stable of a career. One guy I worked with was a former Air Canada pilot who switched careers simply to be able to sleep in his own bed every night.
Reason why pilots make up some much of our work force is that hardly anyone else even knows what NavCanada is. So almost all applicants are either pilots or relatives of current employees.
On another note. We just finished launching our new 76 satellite constellation (Iridium NEXT) that will serve to virtually replace ground based radar and voice communication giving us full coverage flight surveillance and communication globally through ADS-B with no dead spots. This will revolutionize ATS.
