we're still kicking. The game is quieter than it used to be, but there's enough activity to make it fun. Welcome!

There isn't really a downside unless you are a hard-core EV min-maxer.

Reg Discussion / Re: Reg Reset Dec 31st
January 05, 2017, 01:43:46 PM
It's not only player inactivity, too. Turbo wasn't really getting reset with any sort of regularity either due to admins simply not being available. When activity is down, motivation to keep updating regularly goes down with it.

The fast turn rate on turbo is fun but it doesn't really work past a few months at most, since with a low player base the active one just takes over and then nobody bothers trying to catch up. If it's not reset regularly, you just get one person netting away at the top and nobody bothers to play, which has been the state of turbo for the past year or so. Most of the themes are broken now anyway (even on the reg-like code), and nobody has time or motivation to fix them, so there's not much that can be done there, either.

I think the RtR turn rate with a static reg-style code represents a pretty decent compromise between a dynamic game with a decent turn rate while also not requiring resets and theme changes as regularly in order to be functional. It's not really a question of monetary cost (Peace runs RWL on the back of his actual website, and we are low traffic so I don't think we have any impact on his monthly bills). It's just a natural way to wind things down while keeping an active game running for those who want to play.

Can confirm that the badger was designed to be immune to suicides unless everyone kept him maxxed with suicides every day for most of the round.

It could have been done, but it would not have happened any faster than the troop break that did occur.

We wanted to force people to cooperate and come together to make the break happen, rather than just solo suicide runs.

Sevs is correct that desertions could have been avoided by using a rat for the break, since rats don't take fear losses with battlefield healers up. But I wasn't very active at the time of the break, and Woof had no other rats, so Woof made do with what they had.

I don't think it's so much about catering to a particular demographic anymore. Fact is, text-based games are a thing of the 90s. We've survived this long because we have a dedicated community of people who grew up together, but in terms of attracting new players the draw simply isn't there anymore when you look at the alternatives that are available to the same players.

I had a lot of fun coding 3.0, and helping windy with the bots that came after, but I no longer really have the time for big projects. Windy did an excellent job this round, bugs notwithstanding, given the time constraints placed on him, but I think the situation is the same for him.

I've had lots of fun here and I'll continue visiting until it's well and truly done because I really like the people who make up this community, but the game itself is best left to fond memories, I think. We can keep servers running in whatever form people want in the meantime, but big code projects are probably a thing of the past.

Turbo is classic currently but only like 6 people signed up. I suspect the RtR bump was just that - it won't last.

We can certainly leave turbo with the classic code, though.

Return to Redwall / Re: The Badger is here!
November 30, 2016, 06:43:09 PM
Oh, windy sent the midnight message ingame. I knew he had said it somewhere. I'll save a screenshot at 8pm just in case he doesn't get it, and I'll let windy do it then so it's the even 3 months.

So either windy will post this at midnight, or I'll post my saved screenie tomorrow.

Sorry for the confusion everyone.

EDIT: got a timestamp at 8pm just in case, I'll leave it to windy to post it later if he doesn't get the midnight one.

If I'm immortalizing it it it's 8pm EST, 2.5 hours from now just because I won't be around later. I thought windy said he could do it at midnight but I can't find the post anymore so maybe not.

It won't reset right away anyway - I'll just post the scores page at 8 as the immort and we'll worry about resetting the server later on.
